Non starting pinto
« on: 22:37 Sunday 19 April 2009 »
Just bought a 1979 2 litre transit camper van.It started when viewed. Seller delivered to us following day and has not started since .
Fitted new cap , leads ,plugs, cleaned carb twice with airline, tried easy start , remade bad connections, removed redundant wiring,
It has luminition ignition. It only runs when being spun on the starter after that it dies. Tried turning dizzy when cranking but same effect.
Bypassed fuel pump by feeding carb from gravity can but still the same. Any ideas? Please.

hi jerry when you changed the cap and leads did you get them in the right order as i have had it on some pintos that have been timed up 180 degrees out and ther wont run at all untill you move the leads round 180 degrees eg move each lead 2 pegs on clockwise

Sounds daft but have you checked that there's a spark at the plugs? If you have a decent spark there, check there's fuel being delivered. Easy way is to move throttle spindle fully open by hand and look to see if the accelerator jet squirts out fuel into the carb body. If you've got both of these, then I'm with ad, check the firing order. Also worth checking the cam belt is tight and not slipped a tooth or 3.

I also had a mk1 capri with a pinto. That would fire when turning but not when you released the key. That turned out to be a worn connection in the ignition barrel. By pass wire from battery to coil sorted it short term. Long shot but, when you've covered the obvious, sometimes it's the improbable!!
